How to Tie a Tie

One of the most common pieces of knowledge for many men, but also the most challenging, is how to tie a tie. When first learning to do this, many boys and men feel like they're all thumbs. There are different types of knots to learn, but the most traditional is the Windsor Knot. The Windsor Knot is the most popular type of knot and is seen in the corporate environment on a daily basis. You will also see the Windsor Knot being worn in environments like the courtroom as well as the boardroom. It's a style of knot that commands respect and shows refinement and sophistication. Here's how to execute this knot in detail:

Step One: Extend the wide end of the tie approximately twelve inches past the narrow end of the tie. Cross the wide end of the tie over the narrow end of the tie.

Step Two: The wide end should now be taken through the loop located between the tie and your collar. Then it should be brought back down.

Step Three: The wide end is to be pulled to the right, under the narrow end of the tie. Then you take it back through the loop and to the right once more. At this point the wide part of the tie will be inside out.

Step Four: Pull the wide end of the tie across the front area from right to left. The wide end is now to be pulled through the loop again.

Step Five: The wide end of the tie is brought through the knot in th front of the tie.

Step Six: Carefully tighten the knot and straighten the tie using both of your hands. You want to gently coax the knot up to your collar. The perfect Windsor knot is not too tight or too loose.

And that's how it's done! Yes, it seems time consuming and confusing to learn how to tie a tie. And it does take practice. However, you will notice that experienced tie wearers can get this knot completed perfectly in thirty seconds or less.
